HOUT BAY

“Where mountains meet the sea… and every view takes your breath away.”

Something unique about our little town…

There’s something unforgettable about Hout Bay — a place where towering mountains embrace a peaceful harbour, fishing boats bob gently on the water, and the Atlantic Ocean stretches endlessly toward the horizon.

Here, nature and community exist side by side.

From the bustling harbour to the golden beach, from scenic mountain drives to vibrant local markets, Hout Bay offers the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.

No rush.
No ordinary views.

Just one of Cape Town’s most spectacular coastal destinations.

It’s not just somewhere you visit…

It’s somewhere you’ll always remember.

A bit of history

Hout Bay, meaning “Wood Bay” in Dutch, earned its name during the 1600s when Dutch settlers harvested the area’s dense indigenous forests for timber used in building ships and the growing Cape settlement.

Over time, Hout Bay developed into one of South Africa’s most important fishing harbours, becoming famous for its fresh seafood and hardworking fishing community.

Today, the town combines centuries of maritime heritage with modern tourism, while remaining surrounded by the natural beauty of the Table Mountain National Park.

Did you know?

Hout Bay is home to Chapman’s Peak Drive—one of the world’s most scenic coastal roads, with 114 spectacular curves carved into towering cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

It’s considered one of South Africa’s most iconic drives.
