Founded in 1824 by Moravian missionaries as a refuge for freed slaves, Elim became a sanctuary for healing — spiritual and cultural. Its church, completed in 1835, remains the heart of the town, while the surrounding homes were built by early residents using skills in thatching, stone masonry, and carpentry.
Elim also played a quiet role in liberation — not just from slavery, but in education, land rights, and dignity. It’s one of the few towns in South Africa where land has been owned communally by descendants of the original residents for generations.
