A bit of history
Calvinia was founded in 1851 and named after the reformer John Calvin.
The town grew as a farming centre in the Hantam Karoo, known especially for sheep farming and hardy agriculture suited to the dry climate.
Its elevated setting on the banks of the Oorlogskloof River gave it strategic value, and over time it became one of the most loved rural towns in the Northern Cape.
Today, Calvinia remains proudly authentic — rich in farming heritage and natural beauty.
