Carnarvon was founded in the late 1800s and named after Henry Herbert, the 4th Earl of Carnarvon.
The town developed through sheep farming and Karoo trade routes, becoming a classic Northern Cape service centre.
In modern times, Carnarvon gained international recognition through its connection to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), one of the largest radio telescope projects in the world.
