Colenso

COLENSO (KwaZulu-Natal)

“Where history meets the Tugela River”

Something unique about our little town…

There’s a quiet strength in Colenso — a town where flowing river landscapes and powerful history meet in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal.

Situated on the banks of the Tugela River between Ladysmith and Estcourt, Colenso is known for its role in South African military history, railway heritage, and scenic valley setting. It’s a place where the past still echoes across open land.

Mornings begin with mist over the river, while evenings settle into warm valley sunsets.

No rush. No pretence. Just heritage, resilience, and calm.

It’s not just a town… it’s a place with stories.

A bit of history

Colenso was founded in the 1850s and named after John William Colenso, the first Anglican Bishop of Natal.

The town became an important railway and transport centre and later gained worldwide recognition through the Battle of Colenso during the Anglo-Boer War in 1899.

Today, Colenso remains a meaningful historical town with proud local character.
