Howick

HOWICK (KwaZulu-Natal)
“Where waterfalls roar and stories run deep”

Something unique about our little town

Howick is a place where nature and history meet in a powerful way.

Set in the lush KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, this town is known for its rolling green hills, misty mornings, and the thunder of a nearby waterfall that you can feel as much as hear.

It’s peaceful… but never quiet.

Because here, the land tells stories — of nature, of culture, and of moments that shaped a nation.

A bit of history

Howick was established in the mid-1800s and named after Howick.

It developed as a key stop along transport routes between Durban and the interior, growing into a farming and trading centre.

One of its most significant historical moments took place in 1962 at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, where Nelson Mandela was arrested — a turning point in South Africa’s history.

Today, that site stands as a powerful reminder of the country’s journey to freedom.

Did you know?

Just outside town lies the iconic Howick Falls

👉 At about 95 meters high, it’s one of the most impressive waterfalls in South Africa — and is deeply tied to local Zulu legends and beliefs.
