Matatiele has a rich and complex past shaped by migration, culture, and changing borders.
Originally part of KwaZulu-Natal, the town was transferred to the Eastern Cape in 2006 after boundary changes — a move that drew national attention.
The name “Matatiele” is believed to come from a Sotho phrase meaning “the ducks have flown,” referring to a story of hunters whose quarry escaped.
Over time, the town developed as a centre for farming, trade, and rural community life.
