A bit of history
Arniston, also known as Waenhuiskrans, lies along the southern coastline of the Western Cape.
The town takes its English name from the tragic wreck of the Arniston shipwreck in 1815 — one of the worst maritime disasters in South African history.
Out of 378 people onboard, only six survived.
This disaster played a role in improving maritime safety, including better navigation systems for ships along this dangerous coastline.
Did you know?
The name Waenhuiskrans comes from a famous sea cave nearby — said to be large enough for a wagon and a full span of oxen to turn around inside.
At low tide, you can walk into this cave, but timing is everything. As the tide comes in, the ocean quickly fills the space again, making it both breathtaking and slightly dangerous.
