A bit of history
Betty’s Bay lies within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, the first biosphere reserve in South Africa to be recognised by UNESCO.
The town was named after Betty Youlden, the daughter of Arthur Youlden, who purchased land in the area during the early 1900s. Over time, the small coastal settlement developed into a peaceful holiday village while carefully preserving its extraordinary natural surroundings.
Today, Betty’s Bay is internationally recognised for its incredible biodiversity, dramatic coastline, and commitment to environmental conservation, forming part of the renowned Cape Floral Kingdom—one of the richest biodiversity hotspots on Earth.

Betty’s Bay is home to Stony Point Nature Reserve, one of only a handful of places in the world where visitors can walk among a thriving colony of endangered African penguins without disturbing their natural habitat.
