HONDEKLIPBAAI (Northern Cape)
“Where the ocean meets the edge of the world”
Hondeklipbaai feels like the end of the road — in the best possible way.
Perched along the rugged Atlantic coastline of Namaqualand, this tiny fishing village is raw, windswept, and completely unpolished. The ocean crashes hard against rocky shores, seabirds circle overhead, and the salty air carries stories of shipwrecks and survival.
No malls. No crowds. Just sea, sky, and solitude.
It’s not just remote… it’s unforgettable.
A bit of history
Hondeklipbaai, meaning “Dog Stone Bay,” was named after a large rock said to resemble a dog sitting on its haunches.
In the 1800s, it served as an important landing point for copper ore from the nearby Okiep Copper Mines. Ships would anchor offshore, and goods were transported between land and sea — often under dangerous conditions.
The coastline became known for its treacherous waters, and over time, several shipwrecks added to the area’s rich and rugged maritime history.
Today, it remains a quiet fishing village with deep historical roots.
