Lichtenburg was founded in 1873 and named after Transvaal Administrator President Thomas François Burgers’ associate, though the name itself means “city of light.”
The town developed through farming, trade, and later diamond discoveries in surrounding areas.
Today, it remains a major agricultural and regional business centre.
