MAGALIESBURG
“Where ancient mountains meet timeless adventure.”
Something unique about our little town…
There’s something unforgettable about Magaliesburg — a place where nature, history, and adventure come together beneath one of the oldest mountain ranges on Earth.
Towering cliffs, winding rivers, indigenous forests, and open grasslands create a landscape that feels both peaceful and wild. Whether you’re hiking through mountain trails, exploring hidden caves, or simply enjoying the fresh country air, Magaliesburg invites you to slow down and reconnect with nature.
No towering skyscrapers. No city rush.
Just ancient mountains… and endless possibilities.
A bit of history
Magaliesburg is nestled at the foot of the Magaliesberg in Gauteng, close to the border with the North West.
The town was established in the late 1800s and named after the nearby mountain range, which in turn was named after Chief Mogale, a respected Tswana chief whose people lived in the region.
The Magaliesberg itself is estimated to be over 2 billion years old, making it one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Over the centuries, the area has witnessed early human settlement, frontier conflicts, and the Second Boer War.
Today, Magaliesburg is one of South Africa’s favourite countryside destinations, known for its scenic beauty, outdoor activities, and rich heritage.
Did you know?
The Magaliesberg mountain range is older than both the Himalayas and the Alps, making it one of the oldest surviving mountain ranges on the planet.
