Paternoster is one of South Africa’s oldest fishing villages, with a history dating back more than 150 years.
The origin of its name remains uncertain. Some believe Portuguese sailors named the bay after praying the Latin Pater Noster (“Our Father”) during a storm, while others suggest fishermen repeatedly recited the Lord’s Prayer while waiting for loved ones to return safely from the sea.
For generations, fishing has remained the heart of the local community, with many families continuing traditions passed down through the decades.
