A bit of history

Swellendam was established in 1745, making it the third-oldest town in South Africa.

It was named after Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife Helena ten Damme.

The town played an important role as an administrative centre during the early colonial period, and many of its historic buildings remain preserved today.
